To achieve this mission the GM/UM SMS CRL is focused on three thrust areas:
- Smart Device Technology Innovation,
- Smart Material Maturity, and
- Mechamatronic System Design Methodology
Each thrust area is co-lead by a UM Faculty or Research Scientist and a GM Research Scientist. The projects within the CRL are conducted directly by teams composed of UM faculty, researchers, graduate students, GM research scientists and strategic partners across the world. While most of the projects have a primary home in one of the thrust areas, all of them have aspects that span between all thrust areas creating a truly collaborative, cross-discipline, multi-level developmental environment.
